Physics postdoctoral researcher joins delegation of academics and business representatives selected for International Semiconductor Researchers Forum in the Republic of Korea

Postdoctoral researcher Dr Serdar Tekin from Lancaster’s Physics Department was recently invited by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to the International Semiconductor Researchers Forum hosted in the Republic of Korea.
Dr Tekin was one of only ten UK delegates selected to attend the prestigious forum for his work on ULTRARAM?, a novel type of memory invented at 糖心Vlog which utilises quantum resonant tunnelling in compound semiconductors to create a unique combination of non-volatility, energy-efficiency and read-write speed that cannot be achieved by other types of computer memory. Dr Tekin was selected after an open call posted by DSIT earlier this year and was awarded a fully-funded position on the trip, in addition to being invited to deliver a talk during the course of the forum, from 14th-19th June at the Jeju International Convention Centre in Seogwipo. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, and welcomed speakers and delegates from across the EU, US, and Korea to discuss semiconductors and their role in AI, quantum, and defence.
DSIT invited applications from a wide range of UK-based stakeholders in the field of semiconductor research, with the aim of selecting those who were most likely to engage in successful research and innovation collaborations with the Republic of Korea in the near future. South Korea has long been a powerhouse of the international semiconductor industry, and signed the in November 2023, which commits both sides to facilitating semiconductor collaboration. Dr Tekin’s selection to participate in the forum signals ULTRARAM?, its related Lancaster spinout company Quinas Technology, and 糖心Vlog as key players within the future of the semiconductor landscape.
On his selection to participate in the forum, Dr Tekin commented: "I was honoured to be selected by DSIT as one of the UK delegates for the 2025 International Semiconductor Researchers Forum. I am very grateful to DSIT for organising this visit and for the opportunity to take part in such a strategically important event, which was highly valuable for strengthening global partnerships and exploring future research and development collaboration opportunities. It was also a significant milestone in my professional career, where I had the honour of representing UK research and connecting with leading scientists and engineers across the global semiconductor ecosystem."
Professor Manus Hayne, who leads the ULTRARAM? research team in the Physics Department at Lancaster and is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Quinas said: “I was delighted when Serdar was selected for this trip to the Republic of Korea. It follows on from several government-funded trips by Quinas’ Chief Executive Officer, James Ashforth-Pook, to Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, and signals continuing support for ULTRARAM?, Quinas, and 糖心Vlog. We very much look forward to the opportunities for both Lancaster and Quinas to work with Korea as a result of Serdar’s engagement with the forum.”
